History

We at RZB like to look back with pride to our company history, but never too long, as we are much more interested in the future. New technologies, emerging markets and revised processes offer many opportunities for additional development, but also hold some risks. It is our goal to persist by not only sustaining our position, but by strengthening it even more.

 

1939
Foundation of the company by Rudolf Zimmermann in Bamberg (RZB). Manufacture of electrotechnical consumer items. Expansion of the range of products through in-house processing and treatment of glass, ceramics, plastic and metal.

1948
Acquisition of additional buildings for the company. Implementation of glass and ceramics manufacturing. Manufacturing start of all-glass luminaires. Exhibitor at the newly founded "Industry and Export Exhibition" in Hanover; start of export activities.

1953
Completion of a tightly-meshed network of representatives both in Germany and abroad with company-owned external warehouses. Transformation from craft business to a globally active and successful medium-sized business. In the 60s: Large-scale series manufacture of glass and all-plastic luminaires.

1959/1960
Implementation of a Duroplast pressing plant and Thermoplast injection moulding system with toolmaking, mould & die.
Expansion of metal working and processing. Introduction of the trend-setting rapid mounting system Push-tilt all-glass luminaires (DKN). Manufacturing start of ISO oval bulk-head luminaires.


1970
Official inauguration of the new headquarters at Bamberg harbour. Continual development of all company sectors.
Facilities of a laboratory for electrical engineering and material testing for quality assurance.
Facilities of a test laboratory for acquiring national and international approbations.

1971
Manufacturing of emergency luminaires, luminaire signs and communication systems.

1974
Expansion of the product range with projectors and tracks.


1978
Registration of Dr. Alexander Zimmermann as the sole proprietor and managing director of RZB-Leuchten in the Bamberg commercial register. Expansion of the product range with garden luminaires.

After 1988
Production of high-technology projectors and downlights. Takeover of a large part of the production of the company Zeiss-Ikon in Berlin. Facilities of the "L.I.F.E. Centre" with exhibitions, conference rooms for presentations as well as the
RZB gallery "Art in Light".


1992
Foundation of Sonlux

After 1996
New construction of a logistics centre and facilities of a key warehouse for just-in-time deliveries. Certification of RZB Quality Management according to ISO 9001 by DQS. This is associated at the same time with an international recognition through EQ-Net.
Development of a sculpture park in close cooperation with the German Federal Association of Artists of the Fine Arts (BBK).  

After 2000
Implementation of an automatic, flexible luminaire assembly using robot technology.
Restructuring of the information and communication systems.
Participation in the light+building exhibition in Frankfurt every two years.

2004-2007
Further large investments in all manufacturing sectors, such as expansion of metal working with fully automated sheet metal processing.Implementation of a consistent SAP platform for the entire company group.
Starting in 2006, independent participation of the RZB safety luminaire branch with an additional exhibition booth at light+building in hall 4. Presentation of the Flat Polymero Super XXL and Stadion Oval, the largest standard luminaire in the world.Appeal of light art: applied research and development in light technology
